Mate tea: What is the effect?

Mate tea has various positive effects on the body:

  • Mate tea is made from the leaves of the mate bush. Among other things, it provides vitamins A, B, and C, magnesium, calcium, rutin, chlorogenic acid, saponins, theobromine, and theophylline.
  • With a caffeine content of up to 1.5 percent, mate tea not only provides important nutrients but also wakes you up properly. In addition to a positive effect on nerves and muscles, metabolism is also stimulated.

Mate tea helps you lose weight – is that true?

Mate tea is also said to help with weight loss. You can find out whether this is true here:

  • Mate tea has a sweat-inducing and diuretic effect, among other things. Digestion is supported by increased formation of saliva and gastric juice. Your own fat-burning benefits from this.
  • For weight loss, however, these effects are rather secondary. Mate tea is really helpful when losing weight because of another effect: the appetite is curbed.
  • A mate tea alone does not work miracles, but it can support you with a diet. It is best if you drink the tea about an hour before the meal.
  • Attention: Excessive doses of mate are suspected of being carcinogenic. Prolonged excessive use is therefore discouraged.

Prepare mate tea yourself – that’s how it works

You can also easily make the popular tea yourself. Yerba mate leaves are available in any pharmacy. You will also find what you are looking for in specialist tea shops and in well-stocked health food stores. That’s how it works:

  • Use a maximum of 3 teaspoons of mate leaves per liter of water. Boil the water and only pour it over the leaves when the temperature reaches around 80 degrees. Higher temperatures make the tea bitter.
  • Let the tea steep for about 5 to 10 minutes. The first infusion is often relatively bitter. If you don’t like the taste that much, carry out a second infusion with the tea leaves.
  • You can drink mate tea both hot and cold. Tip: You can make the tea even tastier with a dash of milk or lemon juice.
