Ingredients for 4 servings:
- 4 fish fillets (matjes fillet)
- 1 large onion(s)
- 2 tomatoes (vine tomatoes)
- 2 gherkins
Instructions
Working time approx. 30 minutes; Total time approx. 30 minutes
Chop the herring fillets into small pieces. Chop the onions, gherkins, and tomatoes very finely. Mix everything together well in a glass bowl and let it simmer for about 30 minutes. Adding vinegar and/or oil isn’t necessary, as the tomatoes and gherkins will release enough liquid. Personally, I prefer Spreewald gherkins. Serve the herring salad with black bread. It’s also a good accompaniment to boiled potatoes. It’s excellent with any cold buffet, as a hangover cure, or just on its own.
