Pan Bread Recipe: Variants With and Without Yeast and Vegan

Pan Bread: Recipe with yeast

This pan bread recipe just requires a little patience. The dough is something to let rise. All other steps are done quickly and give you fluffy bread from the pan in a short time.

  • Ingredients: 200 g flour, 1 tsp dry yeast, 60 ml lukewarm water, 1 tsp honey, 2 tbsp olive oil, 1/2 tsp salt, and some sesame, to taste
  • Preparation: Dissolve yeast and honey in lukewarm water and leave for a moment. Then knead all the ingredients, except the sesame, together with the water-yeast mixture to form a smooth dough.
  • Now let the dough rise in a covered bowl in a warm place for about an hour.
  • At the end of the rising time, put some oil in a pan and heat it up. Shape all of the dough into a thick patty and place in the hot pan. If you like, you can sprinkle the bread with some sesame seeds.
  • Cover the pan with a lid and let the bread bake over medium-high heat for about five minutes. When the bottom of the bread is browned, you can turn it over and bake with the lid closed for another five minutes.

Pan Bread: This is how it works without yeast

Running out of yeast doesn’t mean you have to give up pan bread. This quick recipe works with baking soda:

  • Ingredients: 300 g flour, 50 g butter, 180 ml milk, 1 tsp baking powder, 1 tsp salt
  • Preparation: Warm the milk and dissolve the butter in it. Mix the flour with the baking powder and the salt.
  • Combine the flour and milk mixture and knead for a moment until you have a smooth, even dough.
  • Divide the dough into four portions and roll them out into flat cakes. Now put a portion of batter in a hot pan.
  • Bake the dough on one side until it bubbles. This should be the case after about two minutes. Flip the pan of bread and cook the other side for a minute or two.
  • Do the same with the remaining flatbread and enjoy the pan bread while it is still lukewarm.

This is how your pan bread becomes vegan

Pan bread can also be baked in a vegan version without any problems.

  • Ingredients: 20 g fresh yeast, 1/2 teaspoon sugar, 350 g flour, 200 ml lukewarm water, 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Preparation: Dissolve the yeast and the sugar in the water and let the mixture rise for about 10 minutes.
  • Sift the flour into a large bowl and add the oil, salt, and water-yeast mixture.
  • Knead everything for a few minutes to form a smooth dough. Then let the dough rise covered in a warm place for about 20 minutes.
  • Now divide the dough into approx. six to eight portions and roll them out into small flatbreads. Then place the batter, one at a time, in a hot, non-stick pan without fat.
  • Bake the dough for a few minutes until lightly browned. Turn the bread over and finish baking the other side. Do this with the entire dough.
