Pill Cake (Rhenish Dish)
The perfect pill cake (rhenish dish) recipe with a picture and simple step-by-step instructions.
“At 9 o’clock in the morning they eat potatoes”, this is how the Rhinelander was described earlier
- 800 gr Potatoes
- 6 tbsp Oil
- Salt
- 100 gr Bacon
- 2 piece Onions, great
- 100 gr Flour
- 3 piece Eggs
- Salt
- 0,25 ltr Milk
- This is a tasty but economical dish that is popular in the Rhineland and Westphalia. Sometimes as lunch, sometimes as dinner
- Peel, wash and dry the potatoes and cut into strips about 1/2 cm wide. Heat the oil in a pan, add the potatoes, season with salt, turn and fry for 20 minutes. Dice the bacon and peeled onion. Fry in another pan for 5 minutes and then add to the potatoes.
- Put the flour with the eggs and the salt as well as the milk in a bowl and stir into a thin batter. Pour over the potatoes and let stand for 10 minutes over a low heat. Place the cake on a preheated plate and serve immediately. Serve with a large bowl of lettuce. In addition – if you like – enjoy a delicious Kölsch.
- This cake tastes very good even when it is lukewarm or cold.
