Ingredients for 2 servings:

  • 21 g yeast, fresh
  • 500 g flour
  • 180 ml water, warm
  • 2 eggs
  • some salt
  • 120 g vegetable oil
  • 40 g sugar
  • 1 egg white
  • some poppy seeds

Instructions

Working time approx. 25 minutes; Rest time approx. 4 hours; Cooking/baking time approx. 35 minutes; Total time approx. 5 hours

for 2 loaves of bread

Mix the yeast with 100g of flour and the warm water, cover, and let stand in a warm place for 20 minutes. Then add the eggs, sugar, salt, oil, and the remaining flour. Mix everything together and knead on a floured surface for 10 minutes. Cover and let stand for 2 hours, until the dough has doubled in size. Divide the dough into 2 pieces. For the plait, divide each piece into 3 pieces again and roll into a 30cm long rope. Braid the 3 ropes into a plait. Repeat with the second portion. Place both plaits on a baking sheet lined with baking paper and let rise for another 1.5 hours, until the plaits have tripled in size. Lightly beat the egg whites and brush the surface of the bread with them, then sprinkle with poppy seeds. Preheat the oven to 180°C and bake the bread for 25-30 minutes.
