Ingredients for 6 servings:

  • 12 fish fillets (matjes fillets)
  • 2 cups yogurt (cream)
  • ¼ liter whipped cream
  • 50 g sugar
  • 3 bay leaves
  • 6 cloves
  • 6 juniper berries
  • 375 g apples
  • 250 g onion(s)
  • 2 lemon(s), the juice
  • salt and pepper

Instructions

Working time approx. 30 minutes; Rest period approx. 1 day; Total time approx. 1 day 30 minutes

Soak the herring fillets in water for about 30 minutes. Whisk together the yogurt, cream, salt, pepper, and sugar. Add the bay leaves, cloves, and juniper berries. Peel the apples, cut into eighths, and thinly slice them. Peel the onions and slice them thinly. Mix everything into the sauce. Pour the sour cream over the drained herring, cover, and let it marinate in the refrigerator for 24 hours. Serve with boiled potatoes and a green salad.
