Store Horseradish Correctly: This Way it Stays Fresh for a Long Time

If you only pay attention to a few small things when storing horseradish, the healthy ingredients of the spicy vegetable are largely preserved. In addition, horseradish stays fresh and aromatic for a comparatively long time if stored correctly.

Horseradish – preserve the nutrients with the right storage

The taste of horseradish is unmistakable and certainly not for everyone. The root vegetables owe their spiciness to the mustard oils, which are not only aromatic but also healthy.

  • However, these are not the only healthy components of horseradish. Did you know that root vegetables contain more vitamin C than lemons? And not just a little more, the horseradish has twice as much vitamin C.
  • While 100 grams of lemon contain around 50 milligrams of vitamin C, horseradish has over 110 milligrams.
  • In addition, horseradish contains potassium, which is important for our blood pressure and electrolyte balance, and some B vitamins, which, among other things, ensure strong nerves.
  • In order to preserve the nutrients and the unmistakable aroma of horseradish, correct storage is essential. Essential oils in particular tend to evaporate quickly and the taste of the horseradish is largely lost.

Store horseradish – this keeps the vegetables fresh and aromatic

If you have your own garden, you not only have organic horseradish at hand at all times, but you also have the ideal storage option.

  • Unlike most other vegetables, horseradish does not have to be harvested at a specific time. You can safely leave the root vegetables in the vegetable patch and only get as much horseradish as you need in the kitchen. Horseradish is frost-resistant, up to minus five degrees do not bother the vegetable.
  • If you get a large amount of fresh horseradish, the garden or alternatively the terrace is a good place to store the vegetables.
  • Bury the unwashed root vegetables in damp sand. This preserves the nutrients and flavor of the horseradish for three to four months.
  • If you don’t have a garden or terrace, you still have the freezer to store the horseradish for a few months.
    Before you freeze the vegetables, wash them. Then dry the roots well and leave them overnight so that the vegetables dry well. The unpeeled horseradish comes in portions in freezer bags or freezer boxes.
  • Basically, only cut as much of the vegetables as you need. Place the horseradish that has not yet been peeled in a plastic storage container or wrap it in cling film. Then put it in the vegetable drawer.
  • You can store cut horseradish for about two weeks without any losses. If the root vegetables are neither cut nor peeled, they will keep in the crisper for about four weeks. Before placing it in the crisper, wash the horseradish and dry it well.
  • If you have grated too much horseradish in your overzealousness, immediately put it in a jar and seal it tightly. Then the glass goes into the fridge. Use the grated horseradish within a week or two.
  • Note: Horseradish is not one of the vegetables you should dry. The root loses the mustard oil and thus its aroma when it dries.
