Store Kiwi Correctly – This is How it Works

Kiwis – that’s why the tropical fruits have a longer shelf life

Kiwis are one of the fruits that keep for a long time and are actually very uncomplicated.

  • The comparatively long shelf life of kiwis is mainly due to the fact that the small vitamin C donors are among the so-called climacteric fruits.
  • Climacteric fruits, which include apples, pears, and tomatoes, have the property of ripening after harvesting. This is made possible by the natural plant hormone ethylene.
  • Incidentally, the plant hormone ethylene is also the reason why you should not store fruit, such as apples and kiwis, together with other fruit.
  • Ethylene not only forces the ripening process of the climacteric fruit but that of all fruit in the immediate vicinity. In the case of fruit that is already ripe, this means that it spoils much faster.

Kiwis – this is how you store the fruit optimally

If you want to keep the kiwis longer, make sure that you only buy very hard fruits when you buy them. The harder the kiwi, the less ripe it is and the longer it will keep. Provided you store the fruit properly.

  • A dark and, above all, cool room, for example in the basement, is perfect for storing the kiwis. A temperature between 10 and 14 degrees is optimal for tropical fruits.
  • If possible, store kiwis alone. If this is not possible, place the menopausal fruits as far away from other fruits and vegetables as possible. Place the kiwis next to each other and not on top of each other.
  • Don’t forget to check the fruit regularly. With the touch of a finger, you can quickly determine which kiwis are already ripe and should be eaten.
  • Tip: Alternatively, store the kiwis in the fridge for a few weeks.
  • If the ripening process of a few kiwis is to be accelerated, place these tropical fruits in a warm place in the apartment. Add some other climacteric fruits such as apples and bananas. This way the kiwis ripen even faster. As soon as the tropical fruits become soft, they are ready to eat.
  • If you have kiwis planted in the garden, harvest the fruit in early November. Store the still unripe kiwis as already described.
  • By the way: Do you already know the little kiwiberries? The healthy kiwi berries are the perfect finger food for on the go and have the unbeatable advantage that they don’t have to be peeled.
