Use Old Apples: You Should Know These Tricks

Old apples can still be used as a delicious meal in a wide variety of dishes. However, if these have already started to mold, the fruits should no longer be used.

The best way to use up old apples is to preserve them as early as possible. Before you start recycling, you should generously remove any pressure, rotten, or worm spots that have arisen. You can then boil the fruit and make it last longer.

  • Applesauce is still the most commonly used method for preserving old apples. To do this, cook the apples with sugar, citric acid, and water until they fall apart. Then mash with a potato masher.
  • You can also make jam from old apples. The fruits are also suitable for increasing the gelling effect in other varieties. Unlike applesauce, you use gelling sugar and not regular sugar. After cooling, you can store the jam for up to 6 months.
  • A final method for keeping apples longer is to make your own apple juice. All you need is a juicer to get the sweet juice out of the fruit. You can then dispose of the rest.

Apple processing for direct consumption

Storage plays a crucial role in keeping apples fresh for as long as possible. The storage room should be cool and dark, preferably in the basement. If stored dry, apples will keep for about a year without any damage. However, the early varieties cannot be stored for so long.

  • If the apples go rancid, you can use them by baking. In addition to the apples, all you need for an apple pie is the dough, on which you then spread the apples. You can also make apple crumble with old fruit.
  • If you like it more exotic, apple fries or apple porridge might be an option for you. While you prepare the porridge according to the recipe, the fries are simple pieces of apple, which you also cover with a layer of caramel.
  • In many of these recipes, apart from the delicious pulp, the skin and core often remain. However, you don’t always have to dispose of them. Put the leftovers in with sugar and water and after a few weeks, you will have delicious apple cider vinegar.
