Recipe of the Native Americans of the Northeast

Place the rice in a pot with water and salt and bring to a boil; then simmer for half an hour. Roughly chop the walnuts and slice the apples into small wedges. Mix half of the maple syrup with the nutmeg, cinnamon, apples, and walnuts (reserve a few for garnish), then toss the mixture with the cooked wild rice. Pour this mixture into a greased casserole dish and bake in the oven for about 15 minutes. Whip the cream with the remaining maple syrup until stiff peaks form. Just before serving, spoon the whipped cream over the warm dessert, sprinkle with cinnamon, and garnish with halved walnuts.
