Scientists often argue about which method of drying hair is the healthiest. Cambridge scientist Tim Moore has been researching the process of hair drying for several years and came to the conclusion that it is healthier to dry hair with a hair dryer.

The doctor attributed this to the fact that after washing the hair, the hair cuticle gets wet and stretches, and the hair becomes larger in volume. All this harms the protective layer of our hair. That’s why it’s best to dry your hair immediately after washing it.

The doctor also cautions against sleeping with wet hair. When we sleep, we often move our heads. Because of the constant friction, wet hair becomes thin and brittle.

How to dry your hair correctly: useful tips

  1. Wet hair should not be combed – in this state, it’s easy to damage or tear it out. In a pinch, you can only use a wide-toothed comb to go through the strands of hair.
  2. Do not go outside with wet hair. The sudden change in temperature damages the hair. Wet hair will split and become brittle after freezing.
  3. Dry straight hair for no more than 7 minutes and frizzy hair for no more than 12 minutes.
  4. Keep the hair dryer at least 20 cm away from your head so that the hot air does not damage the hair follicles.
  5. Blow-dry hair at medium hair dryer speed. Higher speeds can dry out the hair follicles.
  6. Do not tie your head with a towel for long periods of time. The greenhouse effect under the towel makes the scalp more oily.
