Freezing Cherries – The Best Tips

Wash, drain, freeze: preserve cherries

Cherries keep well in the fridge for about 2 days. If you have fresh cherries that you want to keep longer by freezing, proceed as follows:

  1. Fill your sink with water and add the cherries. Wash the cherries gently. This will rid the cherries of maggots and debris.
  2. Then drain the cherries and remove the stems. The fruit should not be frozen with water residue.
  3. You have the option to pit the cherries. But even with stone, you can easily be frozen.
  4. To keep the cherries from freezing into a lump, you can place them in the freezer on a plate or baking sheet for a few hours. Arrange the cherries so that the fruits are not touching each other.
  5. After at least 4 hours, you can freeze the cherries by placing them in an appropriate container, such as a freezer bag.
  6. The cherries can be stored in the freezer for about 8 to 12 months.
  7. To thaw the fruit, you can take the cherries out of the freezer in the evening one day before using them and let them thaw overnight. If you want to process them warm, such as in a cake or to thicken cherries, you can also store them at room temperature for about 3 hours beforehand.
