If you bought hummus, you can use the printed best before date as a guide, provided the package has not been opened.
- If you make your own hummus or open a store-bought package, you can store the paste in the refrigerator for three to five days.
- In any case, always use a clean spoon so that the hummus does not spoil so quickly.
- Mixing some lemon juice into the paste or covering the hummus with a layer of oil can extend its shelf life in the refrigerator to a maximum of seven days.
- You can tell if hummus is bad by the smell, among other things. If the food smells sour, discard it.
- The same applies if the color or consistency has changed, or if you see the oil and water separating from the other ingredients.
- If you even discover mold on the hummus, it’s high time to throw the food away.
- If you want to extend the shelf life, you can freeze the hummus and keep it in the freezer for up to four months.
