Pickled cream herring, grandmother's style

Ingredients for 4 servings:

  • 10 fish fillet(s) , (herring fillet) marinated in oil
  • 1 large apple
  • 1 large onion(s)
  • 500 ml cream
  • 3 bay leaves
  • 15 juniper berries
  • 1 shot of vinegar
  • pepper, black

Instructions

Working time approx. 20 minutes; Rest period approx. 1 day; Total time approx. 1 day 20 minutes

Wash the herring fillets and remove some of the oil. Peel the apple and cut it into small pieces or slices. Slice the onion into thin rings. Place everything in a bowl and layer it. Then add the juniper berries and bay leaves, and fill with cream until completely covered. Sprinkle a thick layer of black pepper over the cream and add a splash of vinegar. Cover and refrigerate for 24-48 hours. Serve with boiled potatoes. Tip: You can soak the herring in mineral water for one to two hours to remove the oily taste.
