Ingredients for 4 servings:

  • 10 fish fillets (matjes fillets)
  • 125 ml vinegar (red wine vinegar)
  • 125 ml water
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 150 g onion(s), red, in rings
  • 150 g sugar
  • 3 bunches of dill

Instructions

Working time approx. 30 minutes; Rest period approx. 2 days; Total time approx. 2 days 30 minutes

quick, easy, very mild

Rinse the herring fillets under cold water, drain, and cut into bite-sized pieces. Layer the herring, onion rings, and dill alternately in a jar. Bring the red wine vinegar, water, sugar, and bay leaves to a boil and let cool. Pour the liquid over the herring. Seal the jar and let it marinate in the refrigerator for 2 days. Serve with fried potatoes and a fresh salad.
