Ingredients for 2 servings:

  • 1 cup oatmeal
  • 3 cups water
  • Salt
  • Honey
  • cream

Instructions

Working time approx. 5 minutes; Cooking/baking time approx. 15 minutes; Total time approx. 20 minutes

Oatmeal, Scottish breakfast, here sweet with honey and cream

Place the oats in a saucepan, fill with water, and add a good pinch of salt. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. The consistency should be creamy and mushy. Place one ladleful per serving into a plate, add honey to taste, and pour the cream around the edge of the plate. Serve, stirring well before enjoying. Note: As the old Scotsman says, “Eat porridge for breakfast every day and you’ll live to be 100!” Adults usually eat porridge unsweetened; it’s part of the full Scottish breakfast, which consists of sausages, black pudding, haggis, ham, eggs, potato scones, fried mushrooms, baked beans and tomatoes, toast with butter and jam, and porridge.
