Put The Fridge In The Right Place – The Best Place For Every Type Of Food

The conditions in the refrigerator are not always the same. There are different temperature zones and sometimes the humidity is different. We will show you which food goes where and how you can save space and still keep an overview.

How to keep your fridge tidy

If you set the fridge to the generally recommended 7 degrees, the temperature will not be the same everywhere. This is important to know when you are putting your groceries in the fridge at home. Because sensitive foods such as meat or vegetables can only be kept optimally if the environmental conditions are right. It is coldest in a refrigerator with a freezer compartment. Devices with 4 stars bring it to -18 degrees and less, 3-star subjects to -18 degrees, 2 stars stand for -12 to -18 degrees. Freezing home-cooked food is only possible with 4 stars, below that only the shelf life of already frozen food is extended. You cannot store frozen food in a refrigerator without a freezer compartment, but such a device is economical and offers a lot of space – ideal if you have a separate chest freezer or freezer. When you stock your freezer, the shorter-lasting goods should always be stored at the front or at the top. So you don’t forget anything that then spoils. Read our other tips on storing food.

Optimal use of cooling zones

The correct way to load your refrigerator depends on the structure of the device. Modern devices usually have special refrigerator compartments for vegetables and fruit as well as meat, sausage and fish. There are not only lower or higher temperatures, but also a different humidity. Greens like it warm and humid, fresh animal products keep best in dry cold. When it comes to fruits and vegetables, it should be noted that not every type can be stored in the vegetable drawer. Citrus fruits and bananas, for example, are better off at room temperature. Otherwise, it is best to proceed as follows when filling the refrigerator:

  • It’s coldest on the shelf above the vegetable compartment, as this is where products that perish quickly, such as meat and fish, belong.
  • Place dairy products such as sliced and soft cheese, yoghurt, and cold cuts in the middle compartment.
  • At the top, where it is warmest, there is room for non-perishable items such as ready meals, pieces of cheese, jam jars, and pickles such as cucumbers.
  • Milk, drinks, mayonnaise, sauces, and mustard as well as butter and eggs go into the compartments provided for this from bottom to top in the door compartments.

What is at the back of the fridge is often forgotten. Put everything that has to go soon to the front. For boxes, a label with the date of storage helps. For optimal efficiency of the device, you should defrost the refrigerator as soon as ice shells have formed.
