Sauerkraut the way grandma used to make it

Ingredients for 4 servings:

  • 60 g lard
  • 2 medium-sized onions, diced
  • 750 g sauerkraut, fresh, shredded
  • 250 ml water, hot
  • 1 m.-sized potato(s), raw, peeled, grated
  • some salt
  • some sugar

Instructions

Working time approx. 15 minutes; Cooking/baking time approx. 1 hour; Total time approx. 1 hour 15 minutes

Heat the lard in a saucepan, fry the onions until light yellow, add the sauerkraut, and heat briefly. Add water, bring to a boil, and simmer covered over low heat for 40-60 minutes until tender. Stir in the grated potatoes, continue sautéing briefly, and season with salt and sugar.
