for children without any alcohol and for adults with relatively little rum
Feuerzangenbowle is a cult drink for convivial winter evenings. But what if children want to join in? There are children’s punches and various children’s punches, but Feuerzangenbowle without alcohol is almost impossible. Therefore, here you will find a low-alcohol compromise in two production stages. Unfortunately, getting a sugarloaf burning requires alcohol, but it is precisely this spectacle of flames that is the special appeal of Feuerzangenbowle. That’s why we first make the completely alcohol-free punch for the children and drivers, and then leave the remaining adults to enjoy the final version, which has a relatively low alcohol content. A cozy event for the whole family! Combine the apple juice, grape juice, and orange juice in a saucepan and heat the liquid to medium heat. Meanwhile, wash the oranges and lemons thoroughly. Cut the oranges and lemons into the thinnest slices possible. Add the cinnamon, cloves, and anise to the liquid after it has been warming for about 10 minutes. Then add the lemon and orange slices to the non-alcoholic punch. Heat the liquid until just before boiling point. Now let the punch steep for at least 20 minutes at high heat. Preheat the rum in a separate pot. Do not boil it under any circumstances!!! The previously completely alcohol-free Feuerzangenbowle is now ready to serve. Place the pot on a chafing dish or a large hotplate, if possible, and make sure the table is on a fireproof surface. Stay as far away from smoke detectors as possible. First, fill the children’s cups. Then place a pair of Feuerzangenbowle (sugarloaf holder) across the pot. In a pinch, you can improvise this using a wire hanger, drywall profile, or something similar. Place the sugarloaf on top, fill a ladle with some pre-warmed rum, and carefully drizzle it over the sugarloaf until it is completely saturated. We use 54% rum to keep the alcohol content as low as possible, but still allow it to ignite. It doesn’t ignite as easily when it’s cold, however, but preheating it makes it a bit more flammable. Light the rum in the ladle and carefully drizzle the burning liquid over the sugarloaf. If you want to keep the alcohol content low, make sure that as little rum as possible drips directly into the punch. Repeat this process until the sugarloaf has completely dissolved. It’s a good idea to turn off the overhead light to fully appreciate the magic of Feuerzangenbowle. Once the last flames have gone out, the adults can finally enjoy a cup of Feuerzangenbowle and tell each other real and imagined stories from good old school days without having a sore head the next morning. Makes approximately 24 servings.
