Ingredients for 6 servings:

  • 750 g matjes fillet(s)
  • 5 m.-sized onion(s), cut into rings
  • ½ liter of oil
  • Vinegar
  • Mustard, medium hot
  • pepper

Instructions

Working time approx. 20 minutes; Rest period approx. 2 days; Total time approx. 2 days 20 minutes

Grandma’s way

Cut the herring fillets into small pieces and arrange them in a single layer in a ceramic pot. Then spread a thin layer of mustard, season with pepper, and cover with onion rings. Add a few splashes of vinegar, then pour over the oil. Repeat this process layer by layer, ensuring everything is completely covered with oil. Cover the pot and let it sit for 2 days. Tastes delicious on bread.
